When the Belle Pre Bottling Company opened in 1902, the factory at the intersection of Henry and Madison was one of three glassworks operating in Alexandria, VA. In 1906, though, the company broke through the competition by introducing a milk bottle that was notched at the top to make removing the paper cap easier.
The Belle Pre Bottling Company at one point boasted that it was the largest milk bottle producer in world, but by 1921, a fire had destroyed the plant, leaving only its legacy behind.
