Personally, I think the experience of pet ownership is a must for anyone who has the time and resources to provide the animals with proper care.
Beyond the more common types of pets, like dogs and cats, there are so many other types of animals that would be great for apartment dwellers.
Here are two types of unique animals that require less space and that have relatively basic care needs. Please remember that all pets require research, time, and effort to keep them happy and healthy.
African Dwarf Frogs
If fish are too common for you, you can try a frog. These African Dwarf Frogs don’t grow much larger than a bottle cap and they are exclusively water dwellers.
Most of their care requirements are the same as pet fish: food, an appropriately sized aquarium with filtration (and a heater is necessary for these guys).
Frogs not your thing? How about a shark? We have an earlier blog story on that!
Freshwater Shrimp (Cherry Shrimp, Ghost Shrimp for example)
Even smaller, but equally as fascinating are these shrimp species. Ghost Shrimp have transparent bodies so you can see their food go through their bodies.
Cherry Shrimp are another species of aquarium shrimp. They’re just as tiny and lively as Ghost Shrimp but are a beautiful bright red. Ghost Shrimp and Cherry Shrimp both are relatively easy to care for according to professional aquarium keepers.
Add some live plants and you’ll have an amazing “micro world” — this hobby is called
“Aqua-scapping”, which I plan on writing about in the future. Here’s a teaser–isn’t it cool!
